Yukon X-Change

Group Organizer

Susan Tinevez, group organizer extraordinaire, has contributed many hours to coordinating the exchange. Without her efforts the exchange would not have been possible.

The Kids

Twenty-one fantastic kids from Green Squad and Blue Squad are participating in the exchange.

Parents

The parents organized the majority of activities contained in the shedule of events. They have done a great job. A special thanks to Jenny Cairns, Elizabeth Read and Jean-Francois Blouin for working so hard on organizing the Buckwheat weekend.

Background

The cultural exchange between Chelsea, Quebec and Whitehorse, Yukon is made possible through a federal government program entitled Society for Educational Visits and Cultural Exchanges in Canada (SEVEC). SEVEC is a national charitable organization offering exchanges, educational trips, and forums. SEVEC offers programming for youth aged 12-17 and has been encouraging youth to exchange, explore and experience Canada since 1936.

The theme for the Chelsea and Whitehorse exchange is cross-country skiing. Chelsea's close promimity to Gatineau Park and it's extensive trail system for cross-country skiing made it a good match for Whitehorse with it's world class trail system at Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre. Approximately 700 people belong to the Chelsea Nordiq, the local cross-country ski club, which has a thriving Jack Rabbit Ski Program for children and youth. The Whitehorse Cross-Country Ski Club has appromimately 900 members and a well established Jack Rabbit Ski Program for children of all ages.
